Kinesiology tape, often referred to as "k-tape," is a flexible, elastic therapeutic tape designed to support muscles, joints, and ligaments while allowing a full range of motion. Made from a thin, stretchy cotton or synthetic fabric with an acrylic adhesive, it mimics the elasticity of human skin and can stretch up to 40-60% of its original length. Originally developed in the 1970s by Japanese chiropractor Dr. Kenzo Kase, it is widely used in sports medicine and physical therapy to reduce pain, improve circulation, and aid muscle recovery.
The tape is applied in specific patterns to lift the skin slightly, which may help reduce swelling, relieve pressure on pain receptors, and enhance proprioception. Waterproof and breathable, kinesiology tape can stay on for several days, even during exercise or showering, making it a popular choice for athletes and individuals managing chronic pain or injuries.
