A Venturi mask (or Venturi oxygen mask) is a high-flow oxygen delivery device that provides precise oxygen concentrations (FiO₂, fraction of inspired oxygen) to patients. It works on the Venturi principle, utilizing a specific flow rate of oxygen mixed with room air through an adjustable valve to achieve a fixed oxygen concentration.
Key Features:
Adjustable FiO₂ – Delivers exact oxygen levels (e.g., 24%, 28%, 35%, 40%, 50%, 60%) depending on the color-coded valve.
High-Flow System – Ensures consistent oxygen delivery even with high inspiratory flow demands.
Venturi Effect – Oxygen flows through a narrow port, creating a pressure drop that entrains a fixed proportion of room air, diluting oxygen to the desired concentration.
Components:
Mask – Covers the nose and mouth.
Color-coded entrainment valves – Each corresponds to a specific FiO₂ and oxygen flow rate.
Oxygen tubing – Connects to an oxygen source.
Common FiO₂ Settings & Flow Rates:
Valve Color O₂ Flow (L/min) FiO₂ (%)
Blue 2-4 24%
White 4-6 28%
Yellow 8-10 35%
Red 10-12 40%
Green 12-15 60%
Advantages:
·Precise oxygen delivery
· Avoids CO₂ retention (unlike non-rebreather masks)
· Useful for COPD patients who require controlled oxygen therapy
Disadvantages:
· Requires higher oxygen flow rates
· Bulky and less comfortable than nasal cannulas
Clinical Use:
COPD patients (to prevent oxygen-induced hypercapnia)
Acute respiratory failure needing exact FiO₂
Post-operative care
